Three-Way Battle

A paltry couple of laps after the start, the Men's Sport category was reduced to a three-way battle between the Simi Cycling Center, Manic Monkey Riders, and Naval Special Warfare Flyin' Frogs teams, who powered away from the four other teams in the category.

When night fell the Simi Cycling Center held third position overall in the race, and riding farther into the night they began to pull away from the Manic Monkey riders. With ten laps complete the gap between these two stood at about 13 minutes. The NSW Flyin' Frogs were 30 minutes farther back.

It might seem that the pattern is getting set. But in the merciless night of the 24-hour race many unexpected things can happen. At the Sport level, the night has proven to be particularly unpredictable. All it takes is for one rider to have very bad lap and 30 minutes can easily be lost.

The leading three teams remain very much in contention. Although the Naval team is adrift, if there is one thing it's members can be counted on it is to be tough in adverse conditions.
