We Salute Two Greats Who Have Graced Our Event
This year's race is dedicated to two extraordinary human beings who are testaments to the hard work and commitment that have made The 24 Hours of Moab such a great event. Their passings leave us at a loss but their lives and character inspire us to be our best.
It is apropos that these two greats represent each of two different aspects of what makes the Suzuki 24 Hours of Moab such an outstanding event, the folks who make it happen, and the folks who race it. |
Ollie Knutson 1932-2008
Since the inception of The 24 Hours of Moab, the Knutson family has provided all of our drinking water and dust suppression. In recent years, there have been five generations of Knutsons manning (and womaning) the hoses and tankers, headed up by Ollie, the family patriarch and his charming wife, Berta.
Ollie greeted me each year with a crushing bear-hug. I felt loved like a son. His bright eyes and broad smile reflected a certain bliss, the kind that comes from clean living, strong faith, hard work and the certain satisfaction of having successfully raised such a loving, healthy and beautiful family.
|
The Knutson family is one of the resilient, hard-working, Mormon families who made Moab their home many generations ago and who made Moab the success it is today. The Knutson name is deeply woven into the history and fabric of the Moab community and Ollie is dearly missed by all.
For our part, we will always be appreciative for the Knutson's hard work and enthusiastic support. How else are you going to host 4,000 people in the middle of a desert!?
Personally, I am grateful and deeply honored to have known and worked beside Ollie Knutson. I will remember him warmly not just this year but every year I return to Moab (and I'll really miss those bear-hugs). |

Mike Janelle 1967-2007
It was a little more than a month after last year's race when Mike and Nat Ross had teamed-up to win the Duo Pro category that we learned of the sudden heart attack that struck Mike Janelle.
Mike's sudden death left us all stunned and especially saddened because his passing left his wife Meribel, pregnant with his son. Mike was extremely excited to be a Dad.
Mike Jr. was born April 7th, 2008. Mom and baby are doing well. A trust fund for Mike Jr. has been set up to, as Larry Lieth from Tokyo Joes said, "pick up financially where Mike left off." Donations can be made at the
Live Like Mike website.
|
Mike will always be remembered for his joy of life, kindness, good humor and generous spirit (not to mention the honk'n horse-power in those legs of his).
He was an extraordinary human being and an example to all of us. If you wished you had known him better, you need only read through the Live Like Mike site. It's a great tribute to Mike and an important touchstone for all of us to be reminded how we can live our lives in greatness when we...

All The World Is A Stage
Folks were wowed when Suzuki Automotive showed up at The Suzuki 24 Hours of Big Bear with their massive two-story stage. It brought the whole venue together as a centerpiece and focal-point for the race and for all of Suzuki's activities.
At Moab, folks will have an unprecedented view of the venue from the upper deck. The stage will be the backdrop for the opening ceremonies and awards presentation and for live music on Friday afternoon as well as two "ride-in" movies on Friday and Saturday night.
You'll have the opportunity to check out the world-class quality and incomparable value of Suzuki's vehicles. Suzuki will be hosting test drives of several of their SUV's. More details on details of all the Suzuki happenings coming soon... |
And Solos Take Center Stage - An Epic Battle in Store
For many, the impressive efforts of ulta-endurance soloist have become a main attraction at 24-hour races around the world. They certainly deserve the attention, the super-human ability to best half the teams, ride more than 200 miles off-road and climb nearly 20,000 ft, as defending champion Chris Eatough did last year, leaves everyone awe-struck.
Moab consistently attracts the worlds best and this year is no different. Chris Eatough returns to defend, Josh Tostado, who gave notice by giving Eatough one of the best runs-for-the-money ever at The 24 Hours of Nine Mile has signed up try again to best Eatough on the Moab terrain.
But wait, there's a new kid on the proverbial block! Eric "Sully" Sullivan has just announced that he will be attending Moab. Though Sullivan started competing as a mountain biker, he has made his mark as an adventure racer for Team Salomon/Crested Butte. Sully, as he is know locally, is a fearsome competitor with an intimidating physique. He crushed the world record for elevation gain on skis by bagging 34 laps and 51,058 ft. of climbing at The 2008 24 Hours of Sunlight ski race.
Of course everyone will be up against the elements as well as a large field of contenders, notably, Rob Lichtenwalner the defending champion and current points leader in The Suzuki 24 Hour Series and Mark Hendershot.
International contenders include: Yuki Saito from Japan, Roan Exelby from South Africa, Leighton Poidevin and Jason Sandquist from Canada, and Dan Brennan from Singapore.

Pua Sawicki and Terri Wahlberg - Top the Women's Solo Field
The women's field hasn't filled out yet but Pua Sawicki, one of the sports very best, is coming to Moab for the first time and she's gunning for a victory. Sawicki bested the field at 24 Hours of Nine Mile by two laps. Wahlberg took a respectable fourth at Nine Mile. There's no official word yet if 2007 champion, Jari Kirland, will be returning to defend her title. More to come...
